Comments:

I lived in Ridgewood from 1950 to 1953 when we moved to Saudi Arabia. As an oil company brat I lived in 8 or 9 cities but I always thought of Ridgewood as the place I grew up. I visited Ridgewood briefly in 1954 after my dad died at age 46, and again in 1956 while on an Eagle Scout trip to NYC and Washington DC. I started in Boy Scouts in Ridgewood. It was the beginning of a life-long participation in Scouting. My best memories of Ridgewood are of the scout activities with Paul Kroner (aka "PK or Peak"), John Quackenbush, Dick Titus, and Paul Stoddart. I think his dad was scoutmaster. I recall paper drives to raise money. We were ahead of the times. The only others I can recall are Carol Ann Howie (I still have the photo she gave me in the 7th grade), Barbara Wright, and Susan Olsgard, whom I met near Graydon pool when I visited in 1956. I regret that I lost track of all of them since I lived in Montana.

School Story:

After a year in Saudi Arabia, our family stopped in Ridgewood on our way to Billings, Montana, where I finished high school. I graduated from the University of Montana, Missoula, then enlisted in the US Army. After OCS in 1967, my entire OCS class went to Viet Nam, except for me and one other guy. I had orders for Viet Nam, but some nameless bureaucrat decided I should spend my active duty at the Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. I left the reserves years later as a Lt Colonel.

What Primary School did you attend before RHS?

Benjamin Franklin

What's your favorite memory of RHS?

Actually a little before high school: I was at a party at Jimmie Warsher's house. We were playing spin the bottle (Don't laugh -- we thought it was pretty daring.) When the group was momentarily distracted, I pointed the bottle directly at Carol Anne Howie. I got a kiss despite protests from the others.

What's your least favorite memory of RHS?

Having to leave the best friends I ever had when our family left Ridgewood.

High points of your life since high school?

Becoming the father of an amazing girl who always makes me proud.

Biggest thing you would do differently if you went back to our time at RHS?

Make a serious effort to stay in touch.

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? Who?

Regrettably I lost track of them. If only we had had the Internet.

Cool things you have done?

For the past 26 years my wife and I have been a host family for foreign students at University of Colorado and the University of New Mexico. We have visited most of them when they returned to their home countries. We are in touch with most of them via the Internet. Most of them call me "Uncle Robert."

Do you have a 'Bucket List'?

No. I try to things when the urge hits me, not save them up.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Reading, hiking, watch classic movies.

Famous or interesting people you have met?

Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court

Ever been on TV?

A few times when I worked on cleaning up a Superfund site in Wyoming,

Name something you love?

History, especially 20th century world history

Favorite place to go?

France
